Exploring Three Top Attractions in Your City: Part 1 – Edmonton, Alberta

Direct Energy loves all our customers across our wide service area, so we decided to take a gander at many of the places you live! With each stop in our Exploring Three Top Attractions in Your City series, we’ll highlight some of best things to do and see in many of the major locales we provide service. It’s a way for us to get to know your city and inform anyone else who may be interested in visiting.

As the capital of Alberta and “Canada’s Festival City,” Edmonton has a lot to offer residents and visitors. Edmonton hosts over 50 festivals annually, operates 22 major parks, and features 150 km of multi-use trails, in addition to arts, museums, sporting events, and more.

Welcome to Edmonton! Isn’t that a lovely skyline?

With something truly for everyone, here are my top three attractions to help you explore the majesty of Edmonton, Alberta.

1) Fort Edmonton Park

I’m a sucker for the living history type attractions you’ll find throughout Fort Edmonton Park.

This park tops my list of Edmonton attractions because it seems so unique from other parks. Even with its natural beauty, it’s the history on display that sets Fort Edmonton Park apart from its competitors. Starting with the city’s fur-trading years in the 19th century, various areas of Edmonton’s history are displayed through buildings and costumed guides. Visitors can wander down streets replicated from 1885 and 1920, and even ride on transportation appropriate to each era such as ponies, wagons, and trains. And be sure to take advantage of the food and souvenir shops located on the premises.

2) TELUS World of Science – Edmonton

This science and space museum truly delights. Through the exhibition galleries, visitors can learn about the body and mind with “The Body Fantastic” exhibit, or explore space at the “Space Place” exhibit, and learn about the Rubik’s Cube and how it was created and then turned into a global phenomenon. Later in 2016, you can learn all about Sherlock Homes and his mystery solving adventures!

In addition to the exhibits, the TELUS has the largest IMAX screen in Alberta, where you can take in shows like “Humpback Whales 3D” and feel like you’re walking with dinosaurs in Prehistoric Planet 3D. If that’s not enough, through the Planetarium, visitors can view the real sun, moon, stars, and planets via the telescopes located at the Observatory.

3) West Edmonton Mall

While I thought the Houston Galleria was huge, it has nothing on the West Edmonton Mall. The West Edmonton Mall is said to be the largest indoor shopping and entertainment complex in all of North America, and I can see why. Shoppers can back in over 800 shops and services, or you can spend your time with ice skating, bowling, billiards, or two mini-golf courses.

While those attractions sound fun, here’s where it really gets good. This mall has the world’s largest indoor amusement park containing 24 rides and play areas for all ages. If that wasn’t enough, it also includes an indoor water park featuring the world’s largest indoor wave pool and over 17 water slides and play features! If you are a visitor to the area, don’t worry, there is also a hotel within so you can have plenty of time to visit each of these attractions.
