Smartphones have become such universal devices that they’ve replaced many of the other little gadgets we used to carry around — even the Mp3 players from our gym bags. Maybe you’ve experienced the dread of showing up at the gym ready for an intense workout, only to discover that your smartphone battery is nearly dead. And if you think that’s bad, imagine what it would be like if you had to exercise just to fill the battery back up again.

Do you need a strong cup of joe before heading to the gym for an early morning workout? If so, be glad your automatic drip coffee maker gets its power from an outlet and not from you. Us humans can generate a few watts worth of energy ourselves when we put in the time and effort, but as you’ll see, exercising to power your coffee maker is not the best part of waking up.

The dishwasher is one of the most time-saving appliances in any modern kitchen. Most dishwashers can make two sink loads of dishes sparkle in an hour or less, all at the push of a button. But it can’t get the job done without a steady flow of electricity — so how much time would it save you if you had to generate all that electricity yourself?
