This spring, use this checklist to conduct an energy check of your home, so you can keep the hot air out and cool air in.
Air conditioner
Get your cooling system working as efficiently as possible. The dust, dirt and other particles that get pulled into your unit can block airflow. This makes your air conditioner work harder and could even prevent it from cooling the air. Whether you have a window unit or central air, start the season with clean coils and a new filter. Either consult your manual or find your unit online for specific instructions on how to do this. Check your filter at least once a month.
Leaks
Inspect your windows and doors for any cracks and gaps that can let in the warm air. Use weatherstripping and caulk to seal the leaks.
Windows
On a sweltering day, blocking the sun with window coverings is a great energy saver. Drapes are optimal, but if you can’t afford an upgrade, plan to use your blinds and curtains.
Insulation
This protective layer is crucial to protecting your house from daytime heat increases as the sun bears down. Install insulation in your attic space, or if it has settled, replenish it with a fresh layer. If your home has an attached garage, insulating shared walls and ceiling space can also slow the heat from creeping in.
Thermostat
A programmable thermostat is an easy way to save money on your electric bills. Program it to run the air conditioner at a higher temperature when your family is at school or work as well as asleep for the night.
