It’s time for another update on the Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge (EEIC)! Conducted by the University of Houston and sponsored by Direct Energy, this contest challenges seven teams of students from a diverse collection of backgrounds and disciplines against one another as they seek to develop a two-bedroom connected home that costs only $80,000 and is 100% energy efficient.
The competition has been heating up, so we decided to send in a few experts to provide the students some guidance, perspective, and advice. Three HVAC technicians from One Hour Air Conditioning and Heating served as the judges for the latest #EEIC meeting, held back on Friday, November 20th, 2015. Specifically, they gave constructive feedback about appliance and equipment selections to students, and it was a great experience for everyone.
And just who were these judges providing their years of expertise?
- An HVAC service technician with 2 years at One Hour, Simon Boettcher has a background in construction, which means he’s worked from the ground up on a wide range of residential and commercial properties.
- With 17 years of service at One Hour, Carl Bernard is an HVAC service tech with a background in appliances and experience that includes work on window units in his early career. He now mainly services residential and commercial properties.
- Field supervisor who’s been with One Hour for 25 years, Derrick Howard currently works with a team of 12-15 HVAC technicians, and he serves as the “go to” guy for training new hires into a successful career path. He has organized extensive hands-on training opportunities with the “equipment trainers” to provide ongoing assistance at One Hour facilities.
The Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge concludes on January 27th, 2016 on the University of Houston campus. Not only will Badar Khan, the President and CEO of Direct Energy, announce and award the winning team, Direct Energy’s own Innovation to Inspiration mobile exhibit (affectionately called “Big Orange”) will also be present for the first stop on its 2016 Tour!
