Help Your Grandparents Create a Smart Home This Grandparent’s Day

Hey there, Grandma and Grandpa!

As we approached Grandparents’ Day, I worried about what to get you this year. A few years ago, I made the mistake of buying you each a smartphone, which now you mainly use to comment on all my Facebook pictures and send selfies. **Cue Loving Eyeroll** But as I continued to research gift ideas, I began to understand just how helpful those smartphones really are.

You might have heard how a “Smart Home” can change the way we live in the 21st century, and much of that is thanks to our smartphones. While it’s easy for me to get on board with the “Internet of Things”, it may be a little more difficult for you to keep up with all the constant changes in technology. That’s why I’ve decided that my gift to you this year will be helping you stay connected with your homes – and hopefully keep you away from Facebook.

Smart Thermostats

A smart thermostat not only learns your heating and cooling preferences to give you the right temperature settings for your lifestyle and schedule, but it also allows you to stay connected with your thermostat even when you’re not home. Most of them have apps to help you can control your home’s temperature from miles away.

I think a smart thermostat would be great for you because, after just a few days, it learns how you use energy and will program itself. That means less time adjusting the temperature of the thermostat and more time commenting on all of my Facebook pictures!

Smart Home Security Systems

Keeping you safe and healthy is my number one priority, which is why a home security system is important, especially a smart one. There are many things that can go wrong, from smoke or an intruder to kids getting in the medicine cabinet, but thankfully there’s technology for all of that!

  • The Homeboy is a video camera that requires no wires and can be mounted almost anywhere, making it easy for you to install! The video camera starts recording once it detects motion, and will send an alert to your phone, email and even favorite social media news feed – yet another reason to be on Facebook! It even gives you the ability to turn on lights, activate your alarm system, or send an alert to someone else’s phone. This is a great way for you to stay connected with your home and for me to be aware of your safety.
  • The Tripper is a smart window/door sensor that sends an alert to your phone when a door/window has been opened. This is will especially useful for you when my younger siblings and cousins visit! It ensures that not only are your important medications safe, but so are the kids.

Smart Appliances

Smart appliances make everyone’s lives easier, and we all know how much you deserve that. While these may not be crucial in life-threatening situations, they are a great way to help you stay connected with your home and life.

  • Imagine getting out of bed with the smell of a freshly brewed cup of coffee thanks to the Mr. Coffee Smart Optimal Brew Coffeemaker (now I know what I’m getting you for Christmas)! You can turn on or off the device from your smartphone, even if you’re not at home!
  • The Crock-Pot Smart Slow Cooker allows you to control the times, schedule, and temperature of the device from your smartphone. This is especially useful for your budding “chef” status. Now you can cook all of those delicious meals I love with minimal effort and without even having to be at home! Maybe even pick up by favorite pie while my favorite dish cooks? Can anyone say “Best Grandma Ever?!?”

Now, you think that technology has taken away the personal relationships we have with one another, but that’s not always true. Keeping you connected with your home gives you more time to stay connected with the important people in your life – like your favorite grandchild! Since you can now control your thermostat, slow cooker, and coffee maker with your smartphone, you now will have more time for the things that really matter – like maybe NOT posting anymore selfies on Facebook.

And to any of my friends struggling with what to get your loved ones this Grandparents’ Day, consider helping them get connected with their home. Not only will they be safer, more energy efficient, and more connected, but maybe, just maybe, they’ll be using their smartphones to turn on the coffee maker instead of “poking” you on Facebook. Now that’s a win for both of you!
