People enjoy life hacks for several reasons, but we especially like ones that help us save money. Sites like DealNews and Lifehacker provide great money-saving tips on a regular basis. In particular, they’ve created a yearly timeline with the best times to purchase certain items. While such a list is helpful, we’ve collected specific items you shouldn’t purchase in a given month. Thus, here’s the October installment of our monthly series on what NOT to buy!
If you are looking for deals, October is not going to be your month. Since we’re a month before the infamous Black Friday and the holiday season in general, deals are going to be few and far between. We’re still here to help – specifically, here are some items in particular to avoid purchasing this month as they are more than likely going to be discounted next month.
Halloween Décor & Costumes
Shoppers will see fairly good discounts during the week leading up to Halloween, but the best deals on Halloween costumes and decorations won’t be seen until after the day is over. While waiting won’t help you this year, it’s a great time to stock up on Halloween gear to use next year.
New Version of Smartphones & Tablets
You’ve seen the commercials for the newest iPhone 6s, which means the prices are going to be at their peak right now after just hitting the market. Waiting till the hype wears off at least a month or so would be more beneficial to your bank account. If you are in a spot where you have to buy something now, then opt for the last model.
Just like with the newest version of smartphones and tablets, deals are less likely to be found on electronics this month. Deals will be at their highest for many electronics during the Black Friday frenzy, so it’s in your best interest to wait until then.
Winter Apparel & Accessories
We’ve touched on this before, but’s helpful to reiterate. For the best deals, always wait until the end of the season to purchase apparel for that season. If you shop at the beginning of the season, you are almost guaranteed to pay full price.
November and December are the months when you’ll be able to see favorable discounts on tools so deal-wise, it’s best to wait till then to make a purchase. Basically, stores look to offload lots of gear to folks buying gifts for the DIY home improvement experts in their lives during the holiday season – and October just doesn’t cut it.
Jewelry & Perfume
These items are definitely worth the wait if you can hold off till December to purchase. Retailers know jewelry and perfume are popular holiday items, so they are not motivated to competitively discount until then.
