Direct Energy Wellness: Treat Yourself Well!

The Direct Energy Wellness series is designed to help you establish and maintain healthy living habits in the workplace. Our wellness experts will introduce you to a range of tips to keep your body and mind in tip-top shape – including exercises you can do at your desk!

Permission has been granted to treat yourself well. And you should do so today – starting now!

To be clear – treating yourself well doesn’t mean taking a stroll to the company lunchroom before returning to your desk for a “working lunch.” And it definitely doesn’t mean checking your work e-mail on your phone as you walk around the block with your family. Instead, it means focusing upon your quality of life for no other reason than you deserve it.

Unsure of how to proceed? Don’t wait until it’s too late! It all starts with the three principles of proactivity!

1) Physical Health

  • Schedule a comprehensive physical and screening with your physician. Getting screened is one of the most important things you can do for your health, as a screening can help your doctors find diseases early, when many are easiest to treat.
  • Maintain a proper sleep schedule. This means going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day AND getting enough sleep – between 7.5 to 9 hours a day.
  • Eat more fruit, vegetables, and other foods that are naturally high in fiber, low in fat, & plant-based. I mean, red meat is great, but you really don’t need it every day.
  • Exercise Regularly. At minimum, do whatever you can to take 10,000 steps daily. At the next level, you should partake of three sessions of some kind of cardiovascular exercise between 30 to 60 minutes in length every week.

2) Financial Health

  • Schedule a visit with an accountant or financial planner. This is the money version of getting a physical. Most of us aren’t money experts, so we occasionally need to visit a professional for guidance and assistance.
  • Create and keep to a budget. Program your dollars for success by developing a worksheet that positively encourages you to follow your spending plan.
  • Build your savings. Any budget worth its salt will include a comprehensive savings plan. The average American has less than $1,000 in savings at any given moment, and for most of us, that amount wouldn’t pay our expenses for a month if something bad happened..
  • Reduce your debt. The same goes for that budget and your debt. The lower your debt, the lower your stress.

3) Mental Health

  • Schedule a visit with a psychologist or therapist. Receiving a mental health screening with a trusted mental health professional can go a long way towards improving your physical health.
  • Check your benefits. Many companies provide direction, recommendations, and coverage for your mental health needs, including “employee assistance programs” that provide help with a range of topics and issues.
  • Look for growth and development opportunities. This could mean at work, with family, with friends, or in your personal time. You’re never too old to engage your old hobbies, find a new interest, or stretch yourself in a fun direction!
  • Surround yourself with better people. This could be people with better attitudes, better outlooks on life, better plans for success, or better dreams about a better world. You deserve better.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “What does all of this have to do with treating myself well?” The answer is simple – by being more proactive about your wellbeing, you will be a better overall person. Not only will you be happier and more productive, but you’ll also treat others as YOU feel! The domino effect that could change your home, workplace, and/or community starts when you treat yourself WELL!
