April showers bring May flowers, and that saying holds true for many parts of the nation. While the rain is needed to turn trees and grass green again, it unfortunately also wreaks havoc on the homefront for those with children. When children are kept indoors for any long period they tend to transform into TV zombies. You’ve probably seen it happen, they start the day bright eyed and excited and then in a matter of minutes of watching TV, their eyes turn into a glazed over stare. Don’t let this happen to your child! Instead, use these 5 indoor activities to help your kids defeat April showers.
Arts & Crafts. Once kids go through drawing, coloring and playdough, it’s time to kick it into high gear with some good ole’ fashion crafts. They take up a fair amount of time while adding some fun and entertainment to the day. There are a variety of places to find cheap and entertaining crafts like your local dollar stores and crafts stores. If you are at home, then there are a number of websites with craft ideas. Here are a few I like:
Board Games. Reinstate family game night with family game day: rainy day style. Let each person pick their favorite game and take turns playing until you go through them all. It’s a fun way to get the whole family together.
Channel their Inner Chef. Baking is one of the best ways to get kids away from the TV and involved because what kid doesn’t love a sweet treat? Decide together on something yummy and age appropriate to bake and have fun with it!
Indoor Scavenger Hunt. Get your kids up and moving with these free downloadable indoor scavenger hunts. To really light a fire under them, entice your little scavengers with a treat of some kind to the winner who comes in with all of their items the fastest. There are tons of free indoor scavenger hunts you can download online, but here are a few to get you started.
Movie Marathon. As most mom’s have experienced, some days seem to feel twice as long as others. Rainy days can definitely feel that way. And after the kids have baked, crafted, played and read it might be time for some movie watching. So pop some popcorn, grab some comfy blankets and pillows and make it a movie day. Let everyone vote on a movie to watch and enjoy the downtime.
