5 Ways to Create an Eco-Friendly Thanksgiving Table

Helping you live green is always on our minds here at the Live Brighter Blog. So during our national holiday of giving thanks, why not include a few thanks to planet Earth for all the beauty and bounty it provides?

5 Ways to Create an Eco-Friendly Thanksgiving Table
Thanksgiving truly is a time to give thanks and go green.

Creating an eco-friendly Thanksgiving table is easy. With these five thoughtful tips, your family can reduce your carbon footprint this Thanksgiving and leave a big impression while you’re at it.

1) Use Real Plates, Silverware, and Cloth Napkins

This is one of the most celebrated meals of the year, so break out the china (or at least the real plates)!

Set your dinner table with organic cloth napkins – they feel good to the touch and are better for the environment than disposable paper. They don’t add too much additional laundry to the laundry basket, and they look more appealing on the table than their wasteful paper counterparts.

And if you don’t have enough silverware or table setting for everyone at your Thanksgiving table, ask those coming over to bring a few sets for the group to use. The real trick to being eco-friendly with this tip: Figuring out if your hand-washing techniques are greener than your energy-efficient dishwasher.

2) Drink Filtered Tap Water

Bottled water can be wasteful, because when you don’t properly recycle all those plastic bottles, many of them end up in our sewers and back into our waterways. Consider using filtered tap water on your table rather than bottled water. Just fill a reusable decorative jug with water, add some ice and few lemon lemon slices, and provide small water cups on your dinner table.

If you don’t have a jug to use, use a few of your empty wine bottles to class up the joint! Soak the label in warm soapy water to remove it, fill up the clean empty bottles with water, and chill them in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving.

3) Decorate Your Table with Nature

There’s no reason to spend money at craft and hobby stores on cheaply made table centerpieces. Everything you need is just out your back door! Here are some suggestions:

5 Ways to Create an Eco-Friendly Thanksgiving Table
The best eco-friendly Thanksgiving decorations are the ones you create with nature!
  • Grab a few mason jars and fill them with fresh cut branches to create the sparse look of an autumn landscape.
  • Pick up some acorns or pine cones, and place them along the center of the table.
  • Collect a handful of colorful leaves, and use them as decoration around a candle on the table.
  • Reuse those decorative miniature pumpkins you bought for Halloween for decorations.

Keep your children active and busy during the holiday break from school by having them help you gather the items!

4) Light Your Fireplace

Stay warm this Thanksgiving and bring on the ambiance! Do you have a wood burning or gas fireplace? Why not light it up this year and save a few dollars on your heating bill.?The whole family will love eating by the fire, and sharing dinner time stories with its warm, inviting glow near by. just make sure your fireplace is maintained and proper working order before you use it!

5) Put Out a Recycling Bin

Place a recycling bin ( or create one with a waste basket) near your dinner table, and clearly label it for recycling. Encourage your family and friends to toss anything from the dinner table that’s recyclable straight into the bin.  Think about wine bottles and other items that can be recycled, rather than throwing them into the regular trash can.
