At Direct Energy, we are always looking for ways to help out in the communities where we live, work and play. In 2011, we have had the opportunity to participate in and sponsor events like the Neighbor to Neighbor program in Texas, the 2011 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards program and the Volunteer Citizen of the Awards programs in cities including Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
Most recent an opportunity came to us via Social Media.
Haven House is an organization in East Lansing, Michigan that provides emergency housing and support for homeless families and is the only shelter in that area that can house whole families. Not only do they support our residents with basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing, and personal needs items, but they have developed programs that will make an impact on the lives of families after they have left the shelter. For example, staff members work with residents to develop realistic personal budgets and the Haven House tutoring program helps children maintain educational progress during a time of family crisis.
Recently, it came to a Direct Energy team member’s attention (via a Facebook post) that the Haven House was in desperate need of a new boiler to keep the residents warm. Thanks to the speediness with which issues can be brought to light via Social Media, Direct Energy was able to step in and make a donation to help out the Haven House.
