Happy Veterans Day from Direct Energy!

Happy Veterans Day from Direct Energy!November 11th is Veterans Day, which is the day where we honor those men and women who have risked their lives and fought for our country. Many communities commemorate the day by throwing parades and displaying the American flag outside homes and buildings.

Veterans Day was initially called Armistice Day as the way  to commemorate the signing of the armistice in 1918 that ended fighting on the western front in WWI. The day was observed as  a celebration with parades and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. In 1938, a Congressional act made November 11 a legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace.

It wasn’t until 1954 that President Eisenhower signed a bill making Veterans Day official. The impetus for the change arose after WWII required the greatest mobilization of U.S. military in the Nation’s history, so veterans urged Congress to change the name from “Armistice” to “Veterans.” From then on Veterans Day became a day to honor all American men and women who have served our country.

One great way to show your support for our veterans is to support the USO. The USO is a nonprofit, congressionally chartered, private organization with a mission to lift “the spirits of America’s troops and their families.” The USO relies on the financial support from individuals, organizations and corporations to fund their activities. In addition to lifting spirits, the USO also provides a wide array “of programs and services to support the morale, welfare, social and entertainment needs of troops and their families, free of charge.”
